چکیده

Background- Soil organic carbon serves as potential indicator of the soil quality which is influenced by changes in management practices. The conversion natural ecosystem anthropogenic activities resulted decline SOC. So, this study was conducted to assess indices and understand dynamics develop strategies for enhancing C pool soil. Methods- present major land use systems Mayiladuthurai district Cauvery delta zone Tamil Nadu. samples were collected stratified random sampling at two different depths estimated indices. Result- SOC, stock, bulk density, microbial biomass carbon, dehydrogenase, index area varied with mean value 12.51 Mg ha-1, 10.57 t 1.26 Mgm-3, 302.52 µg kg-1, 38.21 TPF g-1 day-1and 126.91 % respectively. stock order forestry greater than rice-pulses rice-cotton sugarcane uncultivated among uses area. difference vegetation, litterfall, chemistry, activity, substrate, root exudate, turnover variation under

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

Biomass and carbon stock, carbon sequestration potential under selected land use systems in punjab

Carbon dioxide increase is attributed mainly combustion of fossil fuel and deforestation worldwide.1,2 The current atmospheric carbon concentration is 397.60 ppm.3 The CO2 concentration and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere have increased considerably and are set to rise further. Two major environmental issues of the world today’s are climate change and biodiversity. Increase in a...

Soil Carbon Sequestration and Land-Use Change: Processes and Potential

When agricultural land is no longer used for cultivation and allowed to revert to natural vegetation or replanted to perennial vegetation, soil organic carbon can accumulate by processes that essentially reverse some of the effects responsible for soil organic carbon losses from when the land was converted from perennial vegetation. We discuss the essential elements of what is known about soil ...

Permafrost carbon: Stock and decomposability of a globally significant carbon pool

[1] The magnitude of future CO2-induced climate warming is difficult to predict because of uncertainties in the role of ecosystems and oceans as CO2 sources and sinks. Siberia has extensive areas (1 10 km) of deep (up to 90m) deposits of organic-rich frozen loess (wind-blown silt) that accumulated during the Pleistocene but have not been considered in most global carbon (C) inventories. Similar...
